We like the freedom that having a rental car gives us but in a small city like Evora, narrow cobblestone streets, stone archways just wide enough for a car, \u00a0and lack of parking spots inside the city center make for a stressful arrival.<\/p>\n

Once we found our way to our hotel we dropped off luggage and made our way to a free parking lot just outside the city walls (not as easy as it might sound.) The photo below shows Larry parking our rental car. This lot is also used by locals who work inside the city walls and is nearly full during the day.<\/p>\n

The car park just happens to be next to a Portuguese National Monument. The construction of Agua de Prata Aqueduct was started by King Jo\u00e3o III in 1532. We read that the piping and granite arches in Renaissance style were most probably laid over the old Roman aqueduct.<\/p>\n

We settled into an apartment near the city center with plenty of space and a nice small kitchen.<\/p>\n

The main meal is lunch usually eaten around 1:30 or so. This hearty dish was Pork Cheeks with Mashed Potatoes.<\/p>\n

After a big lunch, sometimes we gather supplies for an evening \u201cSnack Meal\u201d – a phrase for a small meal that we learned from our Great-Nieces and Nephew. Prices are inexpensive here and we created a healthy \u201csnack meal\u201d for less than 10 Euros (price did not include the welcome gift of a bottle of Portuguese Ros\u00e9 wine from the hotel.)<\/span><\/p>\n

We visited the Church of St. Francis and the Chapel of the Bones. The Gothic Cathedral was built in the 14th century.<\/p>\n

The Chapel of the Bones was built by three monks who wanted to create a helpful place for people to meditate on the transience of material things. The chapel contains the skulls and bones of 5,000 monks. We didn\u2019t linger long here.<\/p>\n

The Town Square is pleasant in the evenings,<\/p>\n

and it\u2019s nice to just wander around the meandering city streets.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s early spring in Portugal and this redbud tree is blooming in the courtyard of our hotel.<\/p>\n

Locals tell us that it\u2019s been a chilly winter, but today, the temps here will be in low 80\u2019s. We will pick up our dusty rental car in a couple of days to head to our next stop.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
