{"id":3738,"date":"2022-10-04T12:33:40","date_gmt":"2022-10-04T16:33:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/travel.woodring.us\/wordpress\/?p=3738"},"modified":"2022-10-04T12:33:40","modified_gmt":"2022-10-04T16:33:40","slug":"farewell-fermo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/travel.woodring.us\/wordpress\/2022\/10\/04\/farewell-fermo\/","title":{"rendered":"Farewell Fermo!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The population of the city of Fermo is less than 40,000 people but in spite of the small size, the citizens of Fermo have done quite a lot to make the city an interesting place to visit. \u00a0We\u2019ve been pleasantly surprised!<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday we took two tours, both led by excellent guides &#8211; each one 30 minutes in length. \u00a0The first was of the <b>Teatro Dell\u2019Aquilla. \u00a0<\/b>The theater is well-supported by local businesses and citizens of the town. \u00a0They have a great performance series, including a performance of MacBeth this November (2022). \u00a0It\u2019s a gorgeous space with box seats and a beautiful fresco on the ceiling.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3739\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3739\" style=\"width: 4032px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3739\" src=\"https:\/\/travel.woodring.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/B58B7346-0A30-4B21-B060-5FEE68260E11.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fermo Teatro Dell\u2019Aquila<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Next, we toured the Roman Cisterns, a large underground complex dated to First Century B.C. \u00a0It\u2019s made up of 30 connected rooms. \u00a0Our guide gave a complicated explanation \u00a0of how the water was collected and distributed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3740\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3740\" style=\"width: 4032px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3740\" src=\"https:\/\/travel.woodring.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/43E627CC-C25A-4E33-B091-B7524A4340B2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3740\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fermo Roman Cisterns<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We visited the <b>Metropolitan Cathedral <\/b>which stands at the highest point of the city. \u00a0There is a park surrounding the Cathedral and stunning views of the sea and the hillsides below.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3742\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3742\" style=\"width: 4032px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3742\" src=\"https:\/\/travel.woodring.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1243C2EE-8043-4B2B-AEE7-A7E8341EE639.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fermo Cathedral<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For anyone thinking about a visit to Fermo, there is a slick website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitfermo.it\/en\/the-city-of-fermo\">(HERE)<\/a> with lots of excellent info including history of the city, theater schedules and more!<\/p>\n<p>A few downsides to visiting this city are the hilly landscape &#8211; challenging for bad hips and knees; if driving, the streets are narrow and parking scarce; and there aren\u2019t many decent hotels in the city center. \u00a0Still, we\u2019re glad we visited and three days was just about right with still enough time to include a day trip to the Medieval village of <b>Torre di Palme<\/b> and lunch by the Adriatic Sea at the pleasant town of <b>Porto San Georgio <\/b>which is nearby and \u00a0below Fermo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3747\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3747\" style=\"width: 4032px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3747\" src=\"https:\/\/travel.woodring.us\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/64AA4752-5D09-4354-8953-D4C97B7EC23F.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sharon by the Sea<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We left Fermo this morning and drove about an hour to our next stop, <b>Ascoli Piceno.<\/b> \u00a0It\u2019s pleasant here and we\u2019ve added a night to our stay at <b>Albergo Sant\u2019Emidio<\/b>, which will make this a four-night stay.<\/p>\n<p>Below is the Piazza del Popolo!
